Firmitas (Strength), Venustas (Beauty), and Utilitas (Functionality)—three principles coined by the famous Ancient Roman architect and engineer, Marcus Vitruvius Pollio. Three words that have been part of every practitioner’s life in the field of architecture. It is believed that these qualities are needed when preparing a plan or design for a structure. Qualities that will consider building a good and successful design since each of these plays an important role to the building itself. Eliminating one from these three can make others collapse.
It is important for us that the building that we have designed or planned would last for a long time and strong enough to withstand natural disaster such as an earthquake. And in order to achieve this goal, we should put into consideration the skeletal system of the building.
As the structural system is the backbone or the whole skeletal system of a building, it is also our duty to observe and consider the structural code implemented in the country. Similar to the other building codes, the National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) aims to protect the welfare of the general, the life of the building’s users, and property. The minimum load requirements for the design of a building and other vertical structure are defined in this code as well as the set of rules and regulations that oversees the design, construction, and quality of materials in relation to the buildings’ structural engineering aspects. This code serves as a guide specifically for the structural engineers but should be also observed by architects as they also carry the responsibility of safeguarding life.
In the field of construction, each professional has their own unique skills and their own specific task. Everyone should work hand-in-hand in order to give the best services we can offer to our clients and users. Respect each other to create a harmony that strengthens not only the building but also the bond of professionals working in the same field.
